TRIBUTES have been pouring in for a former teacher and a ‘great man’ of Ysgol Dewi Sant.

Roy Watkins of Glan-y-Mor, Newgale passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1 at the age of 81.

He was born in St Davids on August 16, 1932 and attended St Davids CP School and Ysgol Dewi Sant before going on to study at Trinity College Carmarthen.

Mr Watkins was a member of the St David’s Cathedral choir and was an excellent all-round sports man, playing football, cricket, tennis and hockey for Haverfordwest and the county. He captained St Davids golf team in the 1960s and was also an accomplished actor with the Theatre Dewi Sant.

But it was teaching that Mr Watkins was most well-known for. He taught at Haverfordwest Boys Grammar School, St Davids CP School, Letterston CP School and Ysgol Dewi Sant, where he taught general science and later became assistant head.

Despite retiring in 1992, Mr Watkins was a frequent visitor to the school and continued his close relationship with the staff and pupils.

Some of his former pupils have taken to Facebook to pay tribute to a ‘great man’, a ‘gentleman’ and a ‘legend’ who was well respected by everyone.

During his retirement, Mr Watkins was a keen weather recorder and he was mentioned on BBC Wales on numerous occasions by weatherman Derek Brockway.

Mr Watkins’ funeral service will take place on Friday, August 8 at 2pm at St David’s Cathedral to be followed by interment at Penuel Chapel Cemetery in Roch.
