LEADERS in St Davids have spoken out and condemned acts of mindless vandalism.

It follows the latest spate of car damage in the city, with eight vehicles targeted overnight on Saturday, August 2.

Just last April the wing mirrors and body panels of another eight cars were scratched, and the cover that protects the gas at the cathedral was smashed.

Speaking of the latest incidents, the investigating officer PC Claire Coleman said: “A total of 19 tyres have been punctured on cars which were parked around Cathedral Close and up Tower Hill.

“A grill was also pulled off a high value car in the Quickwell Hill car park.

“It has caused around £3,000 worth of damage.”

Among the victims were Canon Dorrien Davies and his wife, and the cathedral organist.

The Canon said: “What has happened is a sad reflection on a very lovely, warm and close community.

“It’s unfortunate that there are those who feel obliged to commit these terrible crimes. They might seem insignificant to some, but for others they make the difference in their day to day lives, with some people having to pay out a lot of money.

“Personally it has cost me my holiday. I’ve had to pay for eight new tyres on two cars.”

The Canon added: “A minority is making life very miserable for the majority of good law abiding people.

“These people come along and think it’s a great jolly to commit acts of vandalism and criminal damage. Where is it going to end?”

The Mayor of St Davids, Councillor David Halse has also raised concerns about the crimes.

He said: “I fully endorse what the Canon has said.

“St Davids City Council will work closely with the police so they can find whoever is responsible for these crimes.”

He added that it was good to see a strong police presence in and around the city.
