A WEEK of events celebrating Haverfordwest’s history starts on Friday, August 29.

The annual Local History week organised by St Mary’s Church, Haverfordwest, takes place in the church from August 29 until September 5.

This year the focus will be on World War One in the district with talks and displays illustrating its impact on the locality.

It will be an opportunity to explore the history of the town and district through pictures, photographs, records, documents and other objects, and there will also be guided tours of the church.

Among the contributors are Haverfordwest Civic Society, Dyfed Family History Society and Pembrokeshire Archives.

This year’s lunchtime talks, which begin at 12.30pm, are:

Friday, August 29: The History of St Mary’s Church; Monday, September 1: Pat Swales Barker In Flanders Fields - a visit to the war cemeteries; Tuesday, September 2: Simon Hancock - The First World War in Haverfordwest; Wednesday, September 3: Ted Goddard - Captain Francis Cromie: a local hero; Thursday, September 4: Derek Rees - World War One; Friday, September 5: A Guided Tour of St Mary’s.

On Wednesday, September 3, at 7.30pm a concert by the Landsker Singers will include music and songs of the First World War period. Admission will be £5.

Weather permitting; access to the bell tower and church roof will be possible from 2pm to 3pm daily.

Teas and coffees will be available. Admission to the event is free, but donations are welcomed for church funds
