A TRIP to a local recording studio inspired a London-based jazz musician’s debut album.

Guitarist Leo Appleyard, 25, is due to launch his album, Pembroke Road, in Cardiff on September 10. The launch will mark the start of a nationwide tour.

Pembroke Road is also the name of the compilation’s title track, which was written after Leo’s first visit to StudiOwz, a recording studio located on a farm near Haverfordwest.

“I found myself driving along this dusty track and became aware of a sense of space and isolation,” Leo explained. “It was in complete contrast to city life in Birmingham, where I was studying at the time, and had a dramatic effect on me. So much so, that I sat down and wrote the track Pembroke Road soon after I arrived. The rest of the album followed on from there.

“I have developed a real affinity for Wales, and it seemed fitting to start the tour for my debut album here.”

The album showcases music from The Leo Appleyard Quartet, a line-up featuring Leo Appleyard on guitar, Duncan Eagles on tenor saxophone, Max Luthert on bass and Eric Ford on drums. Renowned Wales-based musician Neil Yates guests on trumpet and flugelhorn.

Pembroke Road is released by F-IRE presents. You can listen to samples from the album by visiting www.leoappleyard.com
