RECENTLY staff, pupils and parents at Coastlands School in St Ishmaels were delighted to receive a special visitor from Zanzibar.

The school, which takes part in the British Council Connecting Classrooms exchange scheme, welcomed teacher Salma Rashid from Rahaleo Primary, who spent a week teaching in the school and sharing ideas about educational practice.

Teacher Salma was also welcomed by parents and friends of the school at a special concert given by the pupils in her honour.

This is the second year in the school’s partnership with Rahaleo School which, facilitated by Sazani Associates in Carmarthen, has also involved teachers from Coastlands going out to teach in Zanzibar.

The school’s headteacher Paul Harries said: “It is very important that our pupils develop an understanding of their role as global citizens. We are very pleased to be part of the Connecting Classrooms scheme and are committed to giving our pupils and staff as many opportunities as possible to enhance their knowledge of different cultures and education systems.”

Coastlands is one of only eleven schools in Pembrokeshire to have a link with a school in Zanzibar.
