COUNCILLORS have supported plans to build a solar park on the outskirts of Haverfordwest.

The application from RGE Energy (UK) Limited was discussed by the county council’s planning committee last Tuesday (September 9).

It sought full permission to site a solar farm on land east of Shoals Hook Farm, which lies 650 metres from the edge of Haverfordwest.

The proposal would cover an area of approximately 27 hectares and would provide enough power to supply 3,720 homes a year.

In addition to the panels, small scale ancillary equipment is required. This includes a substation and perimeter fencing.

Six letters of objection were received during the consultation process, with concerns raised about the impact on road safety, tourism, ecology, property values, along with a lack of information regarding traffic management, accommodation for site workers and decommissioning.

Network Rail had concerns about the original point of access, but withdrew its objection following an amended point of access. The Welsh Government has also issued a direction that no consent is granted until further details are submitted.

During the discussion, Councillor Keith Lewis said: “Generally we as a committee tend to favour solar farm applications over wind turbine applications.

“We have to be mindful of how much a particular area can take.”

Cllr Brian Hall said: “What jumps out at me is there are no objections from the community councils.

“I do appreciate there are six letters of representation but the recommendation for approval comes with 10 conditions.”

His motion to approve the application was seconded by Cllr Ken Rowlands. The vote was unanimous in favour.
