A NEW cooperative of artists and craftspeople has formed to continue the legacy of the Spirit of Enterprise project.

The Pembrokeshire Business Initiative-designed project aimed to help entrepreneurs into self-employment and business. It was funded by the Welsh Government’s Rural Development Plan (RDP).

The project ran a gallery and shop, showcasing locally produced wares and art, at 44 High Street in Haverfordwest.

The project’s funding runs out on November 18, so a band of local creatives has negotiated to take the building over and continue where it left off.

“Present and past traders have formed an independent cooperative, called SPARK, to take the project forward,” said up-cycler Angie Newman. “We really don’t want to see it die. So much money has been put into it. There is nothing to stand testament to it if the shop goes.”

SPARK aims to bring together at least 30 artists and crafts people. In exchange for the shop stocking their goods, SPARK members will pay £30 a month plus 10% commission on sales, and commit to two days a month manning the shop. If members can’t do two days, they will pay 25% commission.

The group is also seeking outside funding, and public membership, offering access to events and special discounts in the shop, is also being planned.

“Become a SPARKIE, and help illuminate Haverfordwest!” said Angie. “We are holding a kick-off party on Saturday, November 8, at the Picton Centre. Music will be provided by Core FM – who have been hugely supportive – and there will be a bar. We’re hoping more people will hear about us, and realise there are like-minded people in the area. We’d also like to get the local community interested in the project, and hopefully get them involved.”

Party tickets are £5 from the shop, or by calling Core FM on 01437 454010, or £7 on the night.
