Coastlands School, in St. Ishmaels, has won £5,000 to spend on a school sustainability project, after coming up with winning entry in The Guardian Live Better Schools Competition.

Pupils had to demonstrate a range of eco-ideas showing originality, creativity and a good understanding of sustainability.

The children each had to produce a poster illustrating how we can live more sustainably at home, in school and in the wider world.

Six of these posters were then sent as the school’s competition entry, accompanied by some supporting text explaining the children’s work.

The winning entries were produced by Emilia Clarke, Lily Courie, Bethany Price, Jorja Parry, Ollie Warlow and Caitlyn Hawkins.

They featured the following eco-ideas: saving water; composting; creating a school wild patch; speaking out about what we think is right/wrong; buying fair trade goods; using electric cars.

Head teacher Paul Harries said: “We are tremendously proud of the children’s achievement. At Coastlands we are strongly committed to teaching our pupils about the need to live sustainably and to be responsible global citizens.

"It’s great to see some recognition for the hard work of all the staff and pupils in this important area. The school would particularly like to thank Mrs Wenda Davies for all her hard work in organising the children’s entries.”
