Fishguard’s Theatr Gwaun has pulled off a major coup, being one of only seven cinemas in the whole of Wales to showcase the new Welsh language version of Under Milk Wood tonight (Thursday) on the same date it premieres in Cardiff.

Dan Y Wenallt, Kevin (Twin Town) Allen’s “radically surreal and erotic” rendering of Dylan Thomas’ classic radio play, will premiere on December 11th.

It stars Rhys Ifans and Charlotte Church with guest appearances from Gareth Edwards and Lord Kinnock.

It was filmed in Solva over the summer and features many local people as extras. The director scouted many locations before choosing Solva as “filmic and magical” without being “overly chocolate box”.

“I wanted the unique essence of Solva to inhabit the film in every possible way,” he said. “The local residents, through their generosity and help, contributed to giving the film a subliminal authenticity.” Dan y Wenallt is the first cinema production of Under Milk Wood since the Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton version filmed in Fishguard in 1972.

The film, which will air on S4C will at 9pm on December 27th, is in Welsh with English subtitles. The English language version, filmed back to back will be released in the UK in spring next year.

The film makers say they have veered away from the traditional, literal reflection of Thomas’s original work, instead exploring some of the more visceral elements of the funny, filthily fluid and magical dreamscape while staying faithful to the original text. They say the film is certain to appeal, shock and excite in equal measures.

Dan y Wenallt will show at Theatr Gwaun, Fishguard, at 7.30pm on December 11th.
