A LOCAL couple are feeling extra festive after winning a prize for helping to light up Haverfordwest.

Ever since they moved to Baring Gould Way 13 years ago, Dean and Victoria Gray have turned the outside of their property into a sensational seasonal scene with a range of eye-catching Christmas illuminations.

For the last seven years, the pair have entered Haverfordwest Town Council’s Christmas Decorations Competition. This is the third time they have scooped the winner’s cup.

“It takes me three weeks to get all the lights up, I do it all myself,” said Dean. “At my age, it’s getting a bit tough, but I hope to carry on!”

“It’s become a bit of a family tradition now,” added Victoria, who was diagnosed with MS in 2005. “Every Christmas we add a bit more to the display. The ones at the front – like the little bear wearing a blue collar - are all new this year.”

As soon as the Grays start preparing for their luminous extravaganza, children from the area knock on their door, asking when the lights will be switched on.

“Our own grandchildren love it too,” said Victoria. “It’s like a winter wonderland!”

In addition to the outside lights, the couple decorate the inside of their windows with intricate patterns.

“Every time I look at this display I see something different,” said Haverfordwest Mayor Councillor Roy Thomas, who along with his wife Shirley visited the Grays to present them with their trophy and certificate.

“I really like the big gold nativity scene. I hope seeing this beautiful display will encourage people to have a go and enter the competition next year. Everybody loves Christmas lights, and it would be nice if more people helped brighten up the town next winter.”
