MINDBLOWING Christmas windows at a flagship New York store are the work of an engineer from Haverfordwest.

Metal worker Ian Meredith, 41, helped to create six intricate set pieces to grace the windows of Macy’s, one of America’s best-known retailers.

After completing a mechanical and electrical engineering apprenticeship in Merlins Bridge, in 1994 Ian followed a friend of his who had moved to Boston.

He lived there for five years, and as a hobby started creating artwork out of metal.

“I got into making sculptures, building quite extreme things like masks studded with nails, and creatures with saw blades coming out of them,” said Ian.

He moved to New York after meeting his future wife, and exhibited his work alongside artists from Marvel and DC comics. Ian’s big break came in 2010, when he and fellow metal worker Brett Kahler worked on a commission for French conceptual artist Adel Abdessemed.

“We did a piece for him called Décor, which presents four life-size sculptures of the crucified Jesus made entirely from razor wire,” Ian explained. “It was a really successful exhibition.”

In 2013, Ian and Brett were asked to dress Macy’s windows.

“The main thing we concentrate on in the windows is the animatronics,” Ian explained. “All of our designs move.”

This year’s theme was ‘Journey To The Stars’, with tableaux featuring different planets.

“We had a report that Macy’s was really happy with it, and would like to see our work again!” said Ian. “We’ll have to see what happens next year.”

Ian performs with well-known 1980s punk band Murphy’s Law and has also worked for HBO, creating attractions for its Game of Thrones convention. This gained him a rather unique claim to fame that will mean nothing to people who aren’t fans of the show.

“I stuck the third eye on the crow!” he laughed.
