A CHARITY supporting parents across Pembrokeshire is launching a new group in Haverfordwest just for fathers next week.

Plant Dewi’s DadVenutre project is open to any dads with children of any age and offers a relaxed opportunity to meet other fathers and talk through any problems, issues or successes they may have.

The new Haverfordwest group starts on January 22 at St Martin’s Hall. Other groups are already meeting in Pembroke and Milford Haven.

Project worker Graham Elliott said: “With my dad’s group I very much hand it over to the dads, there’s no agenda, it’s about engaging fathers in parent support and signposting other services. It helps build confidence and self esteem.”

Steve Richmond, who runs a dad’s group in Milford Haven, added: “The group is a great social place for dads in any situation to meet and have fun. The dads can share ideas, and we can tell them about other things that are going on in their area, and support them in role as a dad.”

Summer events were held in Haverfordwest and family trips are organised, so it is hoped the new group will prove to be popular.

It will be run by Craig Young, who said: “I like the fact that this is early intervention and diminishing barriers of isolation. Quite often parents think they are terrible parents but when they realise some behaviours are normal and they are managing it, it’s empowering them to have belief in themselves.

“Every dad that’s there are all there for a slightly different reason. It’s a chance to meet other dads, dads can be particularly isolated.”

Dads can come along with their children or on their own. Sessions are free and dads can come as often or as little as they like. It is a chance to ‘have a laugh and a bit of banter’.
