A former Haverfordwest Mayor and well-known local fund raiser is counting down to a mammoth 100km, 24 hour marathon.

Adventurer Mike Davies, 77, has been training hard for the London to Brighton marathon on June 6-7, which raises funds for the charity Blind Veterans UK.

The cause is close to Mike's heart; his son Nigel lost his sight as an adult and Mike's own father went blind through Glaucoma. Mike is also a retired professional soldier.

Olympic torchbearer Mike has been preparing for the event for the last four months and is currently training for the night time section of the marathon.

He has set himself a challenging precedent; when he last took place in the event in 2013 he crossed the finish line in 17th place.

"My long winter training programme enters its final phase with hikes after midnight, to hone in my night navigational skills, and become accustomed to wearing a head mounted torch," he said.

"It seems only like yesterday that I started my training, but it has been over four months now. I pray that it does not let me down on the day, for one never knows how the weather will turn out," he said.

"I am so excited with the prospect of getting on with it in the company of like minded people, and in support of such a worthy cause."
