PUPILS at St Teilo’s Catholic Primary school in Tenbyhave transformed their journeys to school to scoop a Wales-wide award.

The new Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Sally Holland, visited the school on Thursday to present the pupils with their Big Pedal award from charity Sustrans, for making well over 500 active journeys to school as part of the three-day competition.

In Wales schools logged over 240,000 miles of active journeys during the two -week and three-day challenges - equivalent to one trip to the moon! As part of the celebrations, pupils at the school took part in a Scooter Skills day, learning how to ride their scooters safely and responsibly.

Since the beginning of the academic year, the school has been able to work with a Sustrans’ member of staff to help provide the skills and information necessary to get more children cycling, walking and scooting to school. The school has already received the charity’s Bronze School Mark.

Angela Nicholls, acting head teacher at St Teilo’s, said, “The children absolutely love cycling and scooting to school, they love the freedom and the exercise is good for them, too. We’ll be back to defend our title next year!”

Sally Holland, Children’s Commissioner for Wales, said, “To hear about the transformation in such a short space of time at St Teilo’s was really inspirational; it’s a great credit to the pupils and staff, and to Sustrans for making it happen.”

Professor Holland later sent a message to St Teilo’s pupils, staff and governing body where she said: “I was very impressed by the ethos of the school in which it felt like children and adults cared for and listened to each other.
