A SAGESTON engineer is appealing for information and memories of a 120-year-old steam traction engine which has spent its working life in the county.

For Richard Scourfield, manager of Sageston-based Barlett Engineering, the acquisition of the 1894 traction engine, affectionately known as Peggie, is the culmination of a 28 year quest.

“It was delivered to JH&RO Morse of Trehowell Farm, Mathry, who my grandmother is related to.”

The traction engine continued to be used in the north county up to 1942, before being left forlorn and unused.

“We’re hoping to stir up any memories of it; it’s just been to the Great Dorset Steam Fair, the first time out of the county for 120 years, and there was massive interest.”

He said restoration of the “completely derelict” engine was expected to take several years, adding: “It needs everything; all the plate work and a new boiler; all of which we can do ourselves.

“It’s a complete and utter refurb, a major, major rebuild; many people would walk away from it; I intend to prove them wrong.

Richard is hoping anyone with any pictures or memories of Peggie can get in contact with him on 01646 651387.
