A RECENTLY-LAUNCHED social networking website with its roots in Pembrokeshire has been shortlisted in a national competition for new businesses and innovative ideas.

Home to Roots, a ‘people and places’ site, is the brainchild of former county sportsman Alan Brindley of Tenby.

The long-term aim is to build a social chronology of the UK through the site, which already has a presence of over 1,400 UK towns and villages.

Home to Roots gives visitors the chance to make observations on local issues, get information on future events and immerse themselves in the historic past of their favourite towns and villages.

In addition to Tenby; Saundersfoot, Kilgetty, Narberth and Pembroke are currently the main Pembrokeshire places featured on the site.

Alan said: “I entered the project in The Pitch UK competition, and it has now been selected as one of just three Wales-based initiatives out of 100 chosen to go on to boot camp.

“I’ve had the idea for this site on my mind for about 15 years and I’ve been working on it for about a year.

“I’ve always thought how good it would be to be able to go on to just one website when you’re looking for photos from the past - whether it’s somewhere you previously lived or a team you played sport for.”

Alan is now hoping that Home to Roots - whose webmasters are ObiCreative of Goat Street, Haverfordwest In the meantime, he is seeking support from the public who are asked to vote for Home to Roots on www.thepitch.uk/shortlist. Volunteer researchers and co-ordinators to help manage the project are also being sought, as well as images and text previously uploaded to other social media sites.
