TWO sixth formers at Pembroke School have won family tickets to the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre as the top prizes in a competition centred on Remembrance.

This was the first time the competition had been staged by the Sunderland Trust, which runs the Heritage Centre at the Royal Dockyard Chapel.

A striking drawing of a poppy by Ellie Wheeler won first prize and two poignant and thought provoking poems by Meg Lawrence - on the theme: Why we wear poppies - were judged a close second.

The 18-year-olds, who are in their final sixth form year at Pembroke School, were presented with their prizes by Gareth Mills, chairman of the Sunderland Trust, who is a former deputy head at Pembroke School.

Joining them on a visit to the Heritage Centre was School Librarian Liz Smith and the competition was the idea of Glynnis Iles of the Sunderland Trust.

Ellie’s poppy drawing and Meg’s poems will be brought together in a special panel which will be displayed at the Heritage Centre.
