PEMBROKE Dock Fire Station’s recent annual open day proved a hit with visitors once again, entertaining and educating on the work of the firefighters, as well as raising more than £800 for charity.

Following the July 16 event, Watch Manager Graeme Callan at Pembroke Dock Fire Station said: “There were 200 or 300 people there throughout the day, and we made just over £840 for the firefighters charity.

“It was a very good day all round and luckily the weather held, although later it was a little bit drizzly.

“Thanks to the community for coming to support us, it was really great.

“It’s good for us to engage with the community and good for the community, we do get a lot of good feedback.

“It’s heart-warming to know we’re supported; we don’t like blow our own trumpet but we’re held high in the community. It’s going away from the re-active to the pro-active service.”

Visitors to the open day were kept entertain, with plenty to see.

“There were three trial sessions, a simulated property fire, a road traffic collision and the coastguard doing a line rescue trial, as well as chip pan fire demonstrations,” said Graeme.

“We also had a home fire safety check, and anyone wanting a check can call 0800 169 1234.

“We had very good sponsorship from Tesco in Pembroke Dock, who provided raffle prizes and food and drinks for the kids; we also had sponsorship prizes from Folly Farm, Heatherton, and Manor House.

“We would like to say a special thanks to Gary Smith's wife Shez for the face painting, Callum Furber's mum for helping him on the burger stall and Lola Evans, Nikki Bates, Rhys Coaker, and all members of the Young Fire Fighters who gave up their Saturday to help.”
