THE sound of drums and cymbals were resonating throughout Pembroke’s Golden Grove School as pupils recently celebrated Chinese New Year.

This year, based on the Chinese lunar calendar, which starts on a different date to the western calendar, is the year of the rooster, which lasts until February 15, 2018.

Those born in the year of the rooster, which replaces last year’s year of the monkey, are said to be the most motivated animal in the Chinese zodiac and always put their careers first.

Dressed in a variety of themed costumes from home the pupils of KS2 classes were introduced to the ancient art of Lion Dancing.

Jason Crabtree, from Wales Lau Gar Kuen Kung Fu, took the pupils through the steps and beats of the dances and explained the significance of the costumes and designs he had brought along with him.

The resplendent lion was the centre of attention as it made its way around the hall. Following the morning session with Jason, pupils enjoyed a Chinese banquet at The Pembroke Carvery.

The banquet was very kindly hosted by Sammy, he spoke to the children about the significance of the Chinese New Year, the Chinese zodiac and the naming of years by one of the zodiac signs.

Organising teacher Mrs Bruce said: “Jason is a good friend of the school and the pupils always enjoy his input. The Chinese banquet is a much enjoyed event in the school calendar and the celebration of Chinese New Year introduces pupils to different cultures.”
