PEMBROKE Town Council recently held its annual Pembroke Civic Awards evening at Pembroke Town Hall to thank people who have given outstanding service to the local community.

The Pembroke awards scheme is the town’s highest accolade and was introduced in 1998 to say thank you to individuals and organisations that have brought honour to and have made a contribution to the community of Pembroke.

Those receiving an award on May 11 were: Joan Marsh, who was instrumental in setting up Pembroke Soup; Lyn Edwards, who set up the Pembroke Street Pastor initiative in October 2014; Monkton Priory Working Party, consisting of Kenny Davies, Roger Davies, Michael Davies and David Lloyd, all who look after and maintain the grounds and the building of Monkton Priory Church.

Other award winners were: Sharon Donohoe, who has been involved in scouting for 30 years; Elly Neville, the youngest-ever recipient for her Ward 10 Flag appeal; Margaret Sercombe, in recognition and thanks for her loyalty and kindness for all that she does to support everyone in the local community; Christopher Cousins - who unfortunately was unable to attend the evening - for devoting the majority of his life to helping develop personal social and educational skills of hundreds of local children, and Peter Deponeo of Pembroke Lions.

The Hamish Whyte Award was awarded posthumously to the late Councillor Pauline Waters, mayor for 2015-16.

In one of his last acts as mayor for 2016-17, Councillor Dennis Evans also awarded funds raised to his two charities, Macmillan Cancer Support and Wales Air Ambulance.

He presented a cheque for £2,441.70 to Macmillan and £2,709.98 Wales Air Ambulance.
