PEMBROKE Dock Community School has become the first school in the county to receive the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) level 2 award.

The Level 2 Rights Respecting Schools Award is the highest level, and is granted by Unicef UK to schools that embed children’s rights throughout the school in its policies, practice and ethos.

Children’s Commissioner for Wales Sally Holland visited the school to present the award to Head teacher Michele Thomas and praised the school for their achievement.

Following the award ceremony Sally spent the afternoon with children from the school’s cluster to hear their views on children’s rights and undertook exercises with them to enable them to feel empowered.

“We are delighted to have won this award,” said Michele.

“The children have been empowered through knowing and understanding their rights, along with their sense of responsibility and independence has grown.

“They know their views are important and are listened to. The children have improved respect for one another and are more engaged in their learning.”
