WOLFSCASTLE Over 60’s Club is celebrating a second round of funding from the National Lottery.

A grant of £4,868 was presented to the chairman Paul Hart by Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies in Wolfscastle Chapel Vestry on Wednesday, February 26.

It followed a grant of £2,840 which was awarded in 2012, and the money will be spent on a series of day trips for the club’s 30 members.

Mr Hart said: “The club was hovering around 15 members when we were looking for funding. I knew about Awards for All, which offer grants of up to £5,000. Somebody told me you won’t get it, but if you don’t try you won’t.

“I put down on the application that the money was for educational and historical trips and they liked that. They must have thought these old folk want to learn something, and not just go on a jolly.”

The club’s first of ten planned trips takes place on March 20, when members will travel to Llandysul for a harp workshop.

Other excursions include Felinwynt Rainforest Centre, Bwlch Nant Yr Arian Visitor Centre, Pembroke Castle, the Big Pit National Coal Museum, Brecon Mountain Railway, and Caldy Island.

Mary Thorne, 82, has been a member for more than 20 years and said she cannot imagine life without it.

She said: “It’s something to look forward to and I enjoy the companionship.

“Since the lottery money, we’ve had all these educational trips. We have one a month and they’re absolutely fantastic, and we go for a meal on the way home.”

Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies added: “I congratulate Wolfscastle Over 60’s Club for obtaining these funds from the Lottery. I think they are vital for community cohesion and I’m sure members look forward to using them for different activities.

Wolfscastle Over 60’s Club meets once a month in the chapel vestry and everyone is welcome to join. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 5, where Alan Davies from Solva will be giving a talk about alpacas.
