A COMMUNITY knitting project which saw Fishguard and Goodwick transformed into a sea of colour overnight has won a national award.

Fishguard Arts Society’s Knitting Jazz project was 10 months in the making, and culminated in the grand display on August 22 last year.

It involved almost 600 nimble knitters creating jazzy works of art to camouflage mundane objects in the twin towns, such as bollards, benches and street lights.

Encouraged by its success, organiser Lizzy Stonhold entered Knitting Jazz into the Epic Awards, which recognise excellence in voluntary arts and crafts.

It was shortlisted with 23 other projects across the UK, and was announced as the Wales winner at a ceremony in Glasgow on Wednesday, February 26.

Lizzy said: “"We are delighted to have won the Epic Awards for Wales. Having our hard work acknowledged encourages not only us, but also gives everyone who took part the encouragement to do it again.

“We have been overwhelmed by how many people appreciated, and were inspired by our efforts. Winning this award has proved to us how living in such a remote part of Wales does not mean you go by unnoticed, and we would urge anyone who is inspired to give it a go.

“Beautiful things happen, you meet wonderful people within your community, and it is a joy making so many people smile, all in the name of art."
