OFFENDERS could soon be used to clean up litter hot spots in Fishguard and Goodwick.

The town council has approached the probation service following concerns raised by Councillor Belinda Davies at a meeting in January.

She said the tunnel in West Street was a mess with graffiti, urine and litter.

Since then the town council has been asking residents which areas in the twin towns they feel are in desperate need of tidying up.

The responses that came back on Facebook included the Abergwaun tunnel, the side alley of Theatr Gwaun, St Mary’s football pitch, and the path between the rec and the rugby pitch in Goodwick.

One person commented: “There’s dog mess everywhere. Even bags with dog mess in hanging from branches.”

Cllr Alex Allison proposed that they get in touch with probation services to send young offenders to clean it up.

Councillors have since met with Mark Woolcock from the Wales Probation Trust, in what Cllr Mayberry described as a ‘useful meeting’.

At the last town council meeting, the town clerk Sarah McColl-Dorian said she had started a list of litter hotspots, and had also contacted the local youth organisation POINT, which is going to provide a shortlist of its own.

Ms McColl-Dorian added that she had also contacted residential homes at Hillside and Llain Las to see if there are any elderly people needing help with their gardens.
