TO celebrate the life and legacy of the great Welsh naturalist and explorer, Alfred Russel Wallace, a group of students from Ysgol Bro Gwaun entered a competition run by Swansea University.

They were tasked to design a poster that depicted the life of Wallace, and his contribution to science.

A number of pupils from Bro Gwaun achieved success. They included year seven pupils Jessica George, Thomas Lewis and Dylan Reynolds, year 10 pupils Alicia Creed, Libby Higgins Washbrook, Elen Parry and Carys James, and year 13 pupil Jack Ford.

In addition to the pupils receiving monetary rewards, the science department was presented with a £250 prize.

Emma Bowen from the science department said: “We are immensely proud of the efforts made by our pupils in nationally and internationally recognised competitions and thank Swansea University and Techno camps for the opportunity to have Bro Gwaun’s science talents recognised. It has also proved a useful tool to further enthuse and strengthen higher education links.”

The school also enjoyed a great response to World Book Day, which took place during the first week of March.

It saw pupils in years seven, eight and nine attempt a series of library challenges.

143 challenges were completed during break and lunchtimes throughout the week. Four girls completed all 14 challenges individually, and will be able to choose prizes from the school book club.
