ON Wednesday, March 19 Carrie-Anne Perkins of Letterston had the honour of being invited to St James’ Palace in London to collect her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award from the Duke himself.
22-year-old Carrie achieved the prestigious award after many arduous hours of volunteering, sport and hiking 50 miles over four days.
She said: "It was wonderful sharing my experiences with Prince Philip and also with Tori James, the youngest and first Welsh woman to ever climb Mount Everest.
“It is a time I will never forget and urge other young people to take on the challenges of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme."
Carrie’s journey was not easy going, as she had to undergo a small operation on her back before travelling to Ireland to complete her hike.
Her mum Allana accompanied her to the palace, having supported Carrie right through from her Bronze to Gold award.
Allana said: Carrie is a very modest person, but also very determined. She had to work very hard to achieve her Gold award. I want her to know how very proud I am of her.”
