PLANS to introduce a late night bus service in Fishguard and Goodwick have stalled after it was revealed that funding was no longer available.

The town council had been in discussions with Green Dragon Buses about providing buses two or three nights a week for late night revellers and theatre goers, but research carried out by the bus company showed there was not enough demand.

Councillors were told at the last meeting that originally Green Dragon had offered to fund a six month trial of the service, but said it is no longer feasible.

The town clerk Sarah McColl-Dorion explained: “Green Dragon is happy to provide buses if funding can be found elsewhere, but it is not in a position to be running late night buses with any of its own funding, because there isn't enough demand.”

The Mayor, Councillor Richard Grosvenor said: “When we last met with the people from Green Dragon they were more or less saying that they expected to have funding to do this for six months as a trial run to see how it would go, and now they seem to have changed their view.”

Cllr Mike Mayberry questioned whether the late night bus scheme would be eligible for match funding available from Pembrokeshire County Council.

Cllr Alex Allison raised concerns about the knock on effect the lack of buses would have on businesses in the town, like Theatr Gwaun.

He said: “They need to have transport for their customers; otherwise the sub-community businesses will start to suffer. I suspect they’re suffering already.”

Cllr Allison suggested that Communities Together be contacted to see if they would like to make a contribution towards the service.
