FISHGUARD’S hugely popular pirates and smugglers walk returns on Sunday, May 25, as part of the town’s annual folk festival.

Fishguard has some close links with pirates; the notorious pirate Black Bart was born and brought up in the area. He is said to have invented the skull and crossbones flag to hide treasure which to this day has never been found.

Fishguard was also the last place in the UK to be bombarded by pirates back in 1769, when the privateer ‘Black Prince’ sailed into Lower Town harbour.

You can still see and weigh up the cannon balls, which are kept at the Ship Inn, and at the Royal Oak.

The walk on bank holiday Sunday covers about two miles and examines the places where these events actually took place. It is free to take part and starts at 10.30am from the town square.

Participants are encouraged to dress up as pirates.
