The FISHGUARD and Goodwick branch of the Royal British Legion has announced plans to erect a war memorial on Goodwick Square.

There is a cenotaph on Fishguard Square where a service is held and wreaths laid every Remembrance Sunday, but in Goodwick there are only plaques in St Peter’s Church. They bear the names of 74 servicemen who lost their lives in the first and second world wars, but they can only be seen when the church is open.

Discussions have taken place between the town and county councils and The Royal British Legion over the past few months and is it felt that Goodwick should have its own memorial.

A public appeal to help raise the £6,000 needed for the sculpture has been launched, with £1,500 already raised. The money will be spent on materials, labour, sculpture, carvings, inscriptions and placing the monument on the square.

Goodwick County Councillor Gwilym Price unveiled a rough design by local stone sculptor Darren Yeadon at the last Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council. He said: "It's rather appropriate that it should be built during the centenary year of the World War I."

Mr Yeadon said: “I’m honoured to have been asked to make something to commemorate the war heroes of the village I live in. All the materials are going to be sourced locally and it will be made locally. Everything will come from, and be made within, a mile’s radius of Goodwick Square.”

Donations for the monument can be made by visiting www.justgiving.com/yimby/goodwick

They can also be sent to Yvonne Price, treasurer of The Royal British Legion Fishguard and Goodwick Branch at Min yr Ochr, Maesgwynn Road, Fishguard, SA65 9BE.

It is hoped the monument will be in place in time for Remembrance 2014.
