FISHGUARD and Goodwick town councillors were last week divided over plans to challenge the way Pembrokeshire County Council is run.

A proposal by Councillor Alex Allison asked the town clerk to examine and report back on the system described in the Local Government (Wales) Act 2011 on the system adopted to force change in the committee system adopted by Pembrokeshire County Council.

He said: “Councillors have all expressed concern about the way Pembrokeshire County Council is being managed. They don’t like the current cabinet system.

“I would like the clerk to look at the details so we can hold a referendum in Fishguard and Goodwick, and ask other town councils to do the same.”

The deputy mayor, Cllr Richard Grosvenor opposed the idea after following the goings on at County Hall with interest.

He said: “We as a town council have got a lot on our plate and I wouldn’t want to get involved in a long political fight.

“Two out of three referendums that have been held have been lost.”

Cllr Grosvenor added that the clerk should not have to produce a report.

“We shouldn’t compromise her position as a neutral,” he said.

Cllr Allison, who had the right of reply, said: “The clerk is our legal officer. She can look at the section of the act and see whether we can hold a referendum.

“Bit by bit Pembrokeshire County Council is making the whole county look foolish and we have a responsibility to tell the council enough is enough.”

Four councillors voted in favour of Cllr Allison’s proposal, two against and one abstained. The proposal was therefore carried.
