SERVE the local community, save lives and provide safety advice – it’s all in a day’s work for Fishguard firefighters.

Members of the local community were invited to learn more about their local heroes during an open day at Fishguard Fire Station on Clive Road on Saturday, June 7.

They were able to see the station’s fire engines and a range of other appliances from elsewhere in the county, including the fire bike.

Fire crews also showcased a variety of equipment and carried out fire safety awareness demonstrations, including a chip pan fire simulation.

The event was attended County Councillor Wynne Evans, the chairman of the Mid and West Wales Fire Authority Resources Committee, Fire Authority member Cllr Lyndon Frayling and the Mayor of Fishguard and Goodwick, Cllr Mike Lloyd.

Pembrokeshire County Commander Steve Bryant said: “The open day was a great success and I would like to thank the Fishguard firefighters for their efforts in organising the event.

He added: “I was very pleased that both members of the local community were able to see the professionalism and commitment of our firefighters.”

The event raised more than £800 for the Fire Fighters Charity, which helps members of the fire and rescue community who put their lives on the line every day to save others, whilst providing support for their families.

Fishguard Fire Station is currently on the lookout for professional and committed individuals to join its team of on-call firefighters.

The service is looking specifically for people who can provide cover during weekdays from 9am to 5pm. If you live within 10 minutes of the station please call the fire service on 01267 242636 to find out more.
