MEMBERS of Goodwick Youth Club have embarked on a new venture to bridge the generation gap in Fishguard and Goodwick.

They recently met with the over 65s Friendship Circle to share their knowledge about information technology and how best to use it.

“It was an exceptionally lively occasion and the hour and a half spent together simply flew by,” said Marc Mordey, Communities Together Project Manager.

“It is brilliant to see those younger people willingly sharing their gifts and talents with older members of our community, who increasingly need to be able to negotiate modern technology in order to use services and maintain social contacts."

By the end of the session several Friendship Circle members learned how to use email, social media and Skype, allowing them to keep in touch with family members who live away.

They also looked at how to read digital books and one member has even developed a love for computer games after trying out Candy Crush Saga.

Marc Mordey was joined by Marc Evans from Point, Steve Lewis of Pembrokeshire County Council’s Youth Service and the mayor of Fishguard and Goodwick, Councillor Mike Lloyd in getting the meeting off the ground.

It is hoped this will be the first of many occasions when the town’s younger and older people will meet to share their skills and talents.

Cllr Lloyd said: "I want to praise the young people who have given their time to members of the Friendship Circle this evening; we really appreciate it and look forward to working and meeting together over the coming months.

“We want members of the Friendship Circle, indeed all older people living in Fishguard and Goodwick, to think about what knowledge and experiences they can share with younger people."
