A HAYSCASLTE man is taking on a mammoth marathon challenge in memory of his twin brother.

Lance Corporal Jonathan Gouldsmith was knocked down and killed by a taxi in Llanelli while on leave in April 2011. He was 24 years-old and serving with 4 Close Support Battalion REME.

Three years on, his brother Chris Gouldsmith, a corporal with the Royal Engineers in Tidworth, is taking on the ‘Run Goldie Run’ challenge by completing 10 marathons in just 11 days.

He will be starting in Kinloss in Scotland on September 15 and finishing in his home town of Haverfordwest on September 25.

Both Jonathan and Chris were talented sportsmen and were chosen to represent Great Britain in nordic skiing.

Jonathan was celebrating a services skiing championship win on the night he died.

Chris, aged 27, said: “I chose to start running from Kinloss because both Jonathan and I have done a lot of competitive skiing and the GB development team is based there.”

Chris, who admits to never running a marathon before, underwent an operation in January this year after getting injured while on a tour of Afghanistan in 2010. An industrial crane bucket snapped and fell on his back.

He is no longer able to compete in skiing but continues to coach.

Chris has a target of raising £20,000 for REME Charitable Trust and Combat Stress.

He said: “I’ve had a lot of friends go under the radar and even take their lives over post traumatic stress disorder and not enough people are aware of it.

“And REME CCT has had a big part with supporting my family and I through our loss and I would like to give something back to them and thank them for all they have done.”
