A NORTH Pembrokeshire swimming club has been praised for its work with disabled people.

Fishguard Flyers has become the first mainstream club in the county to be awarded an insport Ribbon award.

Run by Disability Sport Wales, the insport programme supports clubs, local authorities and sport governing bodies to provide sporting opportunities for disabled people.

The programme includes four levels of achievement - Ribbon, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Angela Miles, disability sport officer for Sport Pembrokeshire - Pembrokeshire County Council's sports development service - said she was delighted with the Flyers' achievement.

Presenting club members with their award she said: "This is in recognition for all their hard work and their commitment to providing sporting opportunities for young disabled athletes."

Based at Fishguard Leisure Centre, the young swimmers of Fishguard Flyers meet regularly to train and improve their swimming prowess.

The club now intends to work towards achieving the next tier in the insport programme - a Bronze Award.
