A TEAM of offenders are to transform a graffiti-covered walkway which has become an eyesore in the heart of Fishguard.

The team will be working some makeover magic on the Abergwaun Tunnel at the side of the Abergwaun Hotel which was boarded up by its owners Brains Brewery in June.

The pub is up for sale and the state of the covered walkway alongside has angered residents.

The offenders will be taking part in the Community Payback project as part of their community sentences.

The town clerk, Sarah McColl-Dorion, said: “The walkway has been badly vandalised. It is covered in graffiti and has become a real eyesore in the town. People will be delighted when it has been cleaned up.”

Overgrown areas in Fishguard and Goodwick have also benefitted from Community Payback projects organised by the probation service, Wales Community Rehabilitation Company.

Teams of offenders have cut grass and hacked back weeds in parts of the towns which had become overgrown due to pressure on local authority budgets.

Mrs McColl-Dorion added: “I have personally met with the team from probation who have been here for several Sundays and I have seen the great work they are doing. This is a very productive and valuable programme that is being provided.”

Stephen Lawton, Community Payback Supervisor, said: “We’ve been clearing lots of pathways, including around the rugby pitch, we’ve mown the football pitch and we are planning to tackle a number of graffiti hotspots around the town. We are delighted to be helping to improve the area.”
