A YOUNG Pembrokeshire sportsman has received a boost thanks to members of Fishguard and Goodwick Inner Wheel Club.
To mark the formation of the Inner Wheel movement 90 years ago, clubs around the country were asked to provide a wheeled item for a charity or individual in their locality.
Fishguard and Goodwick Inner Wheel Club members decided to raise funds to help buy a sports wheelchair for 14 year-old Harry Thomas of Letterston.
Harry, who attends Ysgol Bro Gwaun, plays wheelchair basketball for the Pembrokeshire Hurricanes Wheelchair club and for the past three years has represented the Welsh under 15s team at the Stoke Mandeville Games.
Inner Wheel Club Chairman, Val Owen, explained: “We heard about Harry through Angela Miles, the Disability Sports Development Officer for Pembrokeshire. His mum had already raised part of the funds for the chair and we were delighted to have the opportunity to help further.
“With his special sports wheelchair, Harry will be able to progress even further in his chosen sport.”
So Val and her members organised ‘A Day at the Races’ - an afternoon of horse racing at the Fishguard Bay Hotel in June - and raised £1,600.
The club is grateful to those who provided donations and sponsored races and horses, as well as guests whose generosity made the afternoon such a success.
