FISHGUARD and Goodwick town councillors are set to hold monthly surgeries with their constituents.

The proposal was put forward by the town clerk Sarah McColl-Dorion after it had been brought to her attention that some people did not know who their councillor was and how to get hold of them.

The issue was discussed at the last town council.

Mrs McColl Dorion said: “Perhaps we could do councillor surgeries on Thursday market day in the town hall. It would make the town council more approachable to the public and put faces to names.”

The Mayor, Councillor Mike Lloyd said that he and Goodwick County Councillor Gwilym Price had been doing it for many years in their ward in Goodwick and had found it very rewarding.

“You get to know local people and they get to know you,” he said. “Sometimes we get nobody there and sometime we get three or four people.”

The idea was met with some concern by Councillor Paul Mason, who said it would not always be possible as he had to work. He suggested that the surgeries be held once a month instead.

He was reminded by the Mayor that he took an oath when he became a town councillor and that he had duties to the public.

After much debate, the proposal to trial the meetings once a month was agreed by all.
