GOODWICK’s new war memorial is nearing completion and will be unveiled on Saturday, November 1.

A public fundraising appeal was launched earlier this year after it was felt the town should have its own memorial and a place for people to pay their respects.

Currently there are only plaques in St Peter’s Church bearing the names of the 74 servicemen who lost their lives in the first and second world wars.

The Carreggwyn stone, which will make up the £6,000 monument, has been sourced from Goodwick and sculpted by local stonemason Darren Yeadon.

To coincide with its unveiling, a parade will assemble at the old war memorial at St Peter’s Church at 10.30am and will march through Goodwick to the new memorial on the square.

Goodwick County Councillor Gwilym Price said: "It's rather appropriate that the memorial should be built during the centenary of the First World War."

The normal Remembrance Sunday Parade in Fishguard will remain the same, and take place on Thursday, November 9.

The parade will form up on the Golden Mile at 9.30am and the laying of wreaths at the cenotaph will be preceded by a service in St Mary’s Church.

This will be followed by the service in St Peter's Church in Goodwick at 3pm. The parade will assemble by the new war memorial at 2.30pm and march to the church.
