THE prestigious West Wales Brass Band contest comes to Fishguard this Saturday, attracting talented musicians from across the country.

After a memorable first visit to Fishguard two years ago, the contest returns for another intense day of competition playing which will end with expert adjudication and the awards ceremony.

This time there will be 30 bands taking part, including 23 senior bands and seven youth ensembles.

It will be the second leg of the Welsh League programme this year with bands coming from Cardiff, Newport, Abergavenny and the South Wales valleys.

Goodwick Brass Band and the other two bands representing Wales at last week’s UK championships, Llwydcoed and Ebbw Valley, will be taking part as well as Tylorstown, the current league champions.

Goodwick will have three bands in action, its senior band, a Fourth Section band and a youth band taking part, so local hopes will be high.

The contest has attracted top adjudicators in Steve Pritchard Jones from Shropshire and David Roberts from Yorkshire, plus UK finals compere David Hayward.

“We are looking forward to another day of top quality brass band music and some keen competition,” said organiser Tony Evans.

“We are delighted to be hosting this exciting event once again and we hope it attracts a good audience of music-lovers.”

The contest is being held at Ysgol Bro Gwaun and the programme runs from 10am to around 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
