The mayor of Fishguard and Goodwick, Councillor Richard Davies, is urging residents of the twin towns to remain positive about the proposed £100million marina which he says will go ahead in some form “without a shadow of a doubt”.

In October, Conygar Investment Company PLC, in conjunction with Stena Line, put in an outline planning application for a 450 berth marina along with 253 apartments and a 19 acre future development platform for the Stena Line port.

Locals have expressed concern that crucial community facilities will be lost including the public slipway on the parrog and the award winning Ocean Lab which houses a cafe, soft play area, sea life exhibit and the Tourist Information Centre.

“I’m concerned about negative attitude of a lot of people,” said Cllr Davies.

“They just won’t accept that it’s coming. I’ve found that the majority of people are in favour of it, but with reservations.”

Earlier this month representatives from Conygar met with various stakeholders in the area to discuss concerns and ideas for further development.

The Western Telegraph has seen copies of correspondence which confirms that Conygar is now looking at incorporating a visitor centre into the plans which could house a sea zoo, cetacean attraction, lobster hatchery, retail centre and a home for the restored Charterhouse lifeboat.

The correspondence also confirmed that a free public slipway and adjacent car park will be incorporated into the plans.

“I don’t want any hold ups in planning,” said Cllr Davies.

“The people of Fishguard and Goodwick have been waiting long enough. This could be the regeneration we need.

“People have got to start being positive about it, they must be positive and help us along with this. We don’t want to have hold ups with people making objections.”

Cllr Davies added that anybody with ideas for attractions that could be incorporated into the visitor centre should contact him on 01348 873601.

Plans for the marina are available to view at County Hall, Fishguard Library and the Ocean Lab in Goodwick. The consultation period ends tomorrow Friday.
