HAVERFORDWEST Kayak Club has been given the provisional go-ahead to build a clubhouse on land north of Bridge Meadow lane.

Pembrokeshire County Council has conditionally approved plans for the facility, which will feature changing rooms, a new access point to the river and storage areas for watersports equipment.

The club, which has been running since 2002, aims to make the experience of paddling enjoyable, challenging and fun. It has over 90 members and recently launched a junior section, which is growing fast.

Club Training Officer Stuart Coulson said he was “very pleased” at the news. The club is currently seeking funding for the development.

“I would like to thank the Bridge Meadow Trust for their support,” said Stuart. “And I would like to emphasise that our key aim is the development of youth kayaking opportunities in Pembrokeshire.”

Haverfordwest Town Councillor Sarah Llewellyn is a member of the club and a keen supporter of its plan.

“Kayaking and canoeing are pastimes that have something to offer to people of all ages,” said Cllr Llewellyn. “The river that flows through the town centre is currently a very much under-valued and under-used resource. The club’s proposed development would give local people the chance to learn to kayak and encourage more people to use our river.”
