A CLARBESTON Road man found asleep in the back of his car after crashing it has been banned from driving for 40 months.

Appearing before Haverfordwest Magistrates Court last week, Andrew Layton, 27 pleaded guilty to driving his Audi A3 while over the legal alcohol limit.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan told the court that at 3.45am on May 21, police officers on patrol discovered Layton’s car crashed in a hedge banking the Tenby to Gumfreston road.

When the officers investigated, they saw Layton fast asleep on the back seat.

“Asked what had happened, Mr. Layton told officers that he didn’t know but confirmed he had driven the car. When asked if he had been drinking, he said “yes, too much”,” said Ms Morgan.

After giving a positive roadside test, Layton was arrested and taken to Haverfordwest police station.

In interview, he told officers he had been out for a pint in Tenby and left the town’s Bar 10 after consuming “15 pints, a few Jagers and vodkas”.

“After crashing his vehicle, the defendant started to walk towards Pembroke Dock, but cut his foot as he was only wearing flip-flops and then walked back to his car,” said Ms Morgan.

Mike Kelleher, defending, said his client - who has recently moved to Manchester and secured part-time work as a chef - had given a “remarkably frank” interview to police.

“He said afterwards that he couldn’t remember saying any of what he said in the interview and didn’t think that it was even possible for him to drink 15 pints, but he accepts that he was over the limit,” Mr Kelleher explained.

Layton’s roadside test gave a reading of 76 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

“The reading given wouldn’t suggest that he’d consumed 15 pints either, as that would take you far, far over that reading,” Mr Kelleher added.

In addition to his disqualification from driving, Magistrates fined Layton £110 for the offence and ordered him to pay costs and a victim surcharge totalling £105.
