THERE’S still time to catch The VC Gallery’s latest exhibition, a moving display of art created by forces veterans, students, and older members of the community based on the theme of conflict.

Running until December 14 at the Coffee Cave in Haverfordwest, ‘The Art of Remembrance’ show, sponsored by the Bluestone Foundation, also features work by renowned war artist Augustus John.

“The VC Gallery aims to help people to gain confidence and express themselves through art engagement,” said the veteran behind the initiative, Barry John MBE. “It’s about building a sense of community through creativity.”

While the Gallery aims to help veterans deal with the often difficult transition from life in the forces to life on ‘civvy street’, the initiative’s reach is far wider.

“What we want to create is a place where people can network and interact with people they may not usually interact with,” said Barry. “For example we have elderly people working with the disabled, and veterans working with students.”

The VC Gallery offers people friendship and purpose, plus the opportunity to “give something back” to their community, and to have a bit of fun.

“We’re not trying to produce the next Picasso – although it would be great if we did!” Barry joked.

The Gallery’s next project is entitled ‘Hidden Pembrokeshire’. Everyone involved is tasked with finding an area of interest that is “off the beaten track”, and the whole team will document each site using a range of mediums. An exhibition is planned for March 2015.

“We’re self-funded, so we’re always looking for sponsorship to help achieve our aims and ideals,” said Barry. “Any donations are always very welcome”
