HUNDREDS of people headed to the SkateJam in Haverfordwest to celebrate the first anniversary of the town’s highly rated Skatepark.

Organised by the Haverfordwest Skatepark Association (HSA) with help from the Haverfordwest branch of the Round Table, Saturday’s (June 20) event was so popular it was tough to find a spot to watch the skate and BMX competitions – MC’d by Geordie of Maverick Industries, the company that built the park – which ran throughout the afternoon.

“It’s been brilliant. Over the course of the day, probably 1000 people have come,” said HSA chairman Geraint Williams. “The Moonshine Crew, who come from all over England and skate all over the world, reckon this is the best skatepark in Britain. That makes us really proud.”

HSA secretary Alison Turner added that the success of the SkateJam had given all the people behind the community facility a “good buzz”.

“We’d like to thank everyone who supported the SkateJam,” said Alison. “The Round Table for its help, £500 donation and money from the 100 Club; the traders; the St John’s Ambulance; Maverick and all those who donated raffle and competition prizes.”

The HSA needs to raise around £3000 a year to keep access to the Skatepark free and pay for lighting at the facility. Anyone who would like to help the HSA, by volunteering or making a donation, can e-mail alisonturneruk@yahoo.com
