Industrial action planned by Unison members has been suspended while negotiations on new pay proposals continue.

Pembrokeshire Unison members were due to join others across England and Wales in industrial action over pay tomorrow (Tuesday).

But the action has been postponed while Unison, GMB and Unite consult with their members on new proposals put forward by the Local Government Association as the best achievable by negotiation.

The proposals cover the period from 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2016.

Local branch secretary, Vic Dennis said: “We keep services going day in day out, despite savage government cuts to vital services and jobs. We look after the elderly, the vulnerable – those who need it most. Almost half a million of our jobs have gone. Those of us left are doing far more for far less.

“We empty your bins, clean your schools, educate and care for your children, conduct your marriages and civil partnerships, and check the safety of your food. We look after your children in schools and your parents in care. And so much more.

“Following a three-year pay freeze and a pay cut last year, our employers have made us a 1% pay offer. The cost of living is increasing by 2.5% so this amounts to another pay cut. Our wages are worth 20% less than they were in 2010.”
