HAFAN Cymru’s Haverfordwest base was a hive of activity on Wednesday (April 29) as it hosted a networking lunch to promote its services.

The charitable housing association provides support to men, women and children across Wales, helping them to escape domestic abuse and regain independence.

One of the many ways it assists victims is through the Freedom Programme, a 12 week course aimed at helping those affected by domestic abuse to recognise the signs and avoid abusive relationships in the future.

Referrals are made to Hafan Cymru from various sources, including the police, social services, the corporate parenting team and Gwalia.

The Freedom Programme does not benefit from Hafan Cymru’s core funding, and so relies heavily on the generosity of local groups, such as the Domestic Abuse Forum and Milford Haven Soroptimists, which handed over cheques for £2,336.78 and £1,000 at Wednesday’s event.

Gill Bowen from Milford Haven Soroptimists chose the Freedom Programme as her charity when she was president of the group last year. She said: “I used to work in family court and it’s very important to me that women have support during terrible times.

“A lot of people say these women who always go with the same men must want to get abused, and what the Freedom Programme does is help women understand why they keep ending up with the wrong man.

“The money was raised by putting on a charity film night at the Torch Theatre and a coffee morning.”

Ceri is among the victims of domestic abuse who has benefited from the Freedom Programme. She said it gave her “the urge to want to do more”, as well as “confidence, self esteem and strength.” Sandra is a fellow service user. She said: “I didn’t realise the things I’ve gone through until I did the course.

“I knew domestic violence wasn’t my fault, but the Freedom Programme gives you more insight.”

“You meet lots of nice people who have been in the same situation as you.”

Sandra and Ceri are now working on a new group called Live Women 2. It provides continued support to people who have finished the Freedom Programme. If you would like more information about Hafan Cymru and its services, call the office on 01437768671.
