MORE than 100 years after she was built, a Milford Haven trawler returned for a flying visit to the waterway on the weekend.

The tall ship Deodar spent two days in the port, where she once delivered fish to the town's thriving fish market.

Built at the Jackmans Shipyard in Brixham, England, in 1911, the Deodar was sent directly to Milford Haven after construction was finished, having been ordered by Henry and Edward Hellings fish chandlers.

She trawled the Bristol Channel for eight years, before being sold to Slater and Barnard of Lowestoft in 1919.

In 1937 she was sold to Sweden, and changed hands several times over the years.

From1959 she was used as a leisure yacht, and in 1968 was partly damaged by a fire, before being bought by Thomas Hellstrom in 1972.

Thomas and his partner Vanessa McIntosh have lovingly restored the ship, and are now in the process of sailing around the UK.

"The main inspiration for this trip was to visit Deodar's original home port, Milford Haven," said Vanessa, adding that the trip had both nostalgic and historical resonance.

After leaving Milford Haven, the ship will now call at ports in Brixham and Lowestoft, before heading back to Sweden.
