A SONIC artwork exploring the 'poetic and mythological power of the river' boomed its way along the Cleddau on Sunday evening.

Commissioned by the Confluence project in Haverfordwest, and created by artist Serena Korda, ‘Black Diamond’ is a dance music inspired track incorporating 20 field recordings of local musicians and singers, remixed by Serena and composer Andy Wheddon.

Followed by a coach-load of face-painted guests, the 'rave boat' boat travelled the Western Cleddau from Neyland Marina to Haverfordwest, blasting out the track from a massive sound system as it went.

The boat’s journey was punctuated by three live riverside musical performances, and ended with a full playing of the 45-minute track when the vessel arrived in the county town.

Hayley Barrett, 30, from Haverfordwest, travelled on the coach and said she enjoyed the experience.

“I think it’s great,” she enthused. “It’s brought people of all ages together from throughout Pembrokeshire. I like this sort of music anyway, and this track has been really well produced. Even though it’s a rainy Sunday, loads of people are here.”

James Cotton, Marina Manager at Neyland Yacht Haven, said around 60 people - and a local harpist - were at the marina to see the boat off.

Asked what he thought of the project, he said: "It was different, we weren’t sure what to expect.

"We do lots of events here, but nothing like that!

"It definitely brought a bit of colour to the area."

But Mayor of Neyland Margaret Brace said she was disappointed that the project had not made more of an effort to communicate with the town council, and local residents.

"It's wonderful that people were using Neyland, but the council should have been informed because then we could have attended, and let others know.

"It only takes an email," she added.

For those wanting to find out more about the Confluence project, an open day will be held at The Lab Haverfordwest – based in the former Ocky White’s building - on Saturday, September 19, from 10am to 5pm.

“It’s a real opportunity for anyone who says they don’t understand what we’re doing to find out what The Lab is, and what our plans are,” said spokesman Guy Norman.

“We are also keen to hear people’s ideas about what we could do in Haverfordwest.”

Transition Haverfordwest will be supporting the event by running a pop-up café.
