PLANS to build a larger Aldi store in Pembroke Dock have been given the go ahead.

The supermarket chain already had consent to build a store at the former Waterloo Garage site on London Road, and this latest application sought planning permission to extend the store by a further 397 square metres, making a total floor space of 1,254 square metres.

The store would be accessed from Eastern Avenue, and it includes a 108 space car park and landscaping.

The County Council’s planning officers recommended that the application be approved, subject to conditions, including opening and delivery hours.

Speaking at the Planning and Rights of Way Committee meeting on Tuesday, November 10 on behalf of Aldi was Huw Jones.

He said: “Aldi remains committed to the delivery of this store to serve the residents of Pembroke Dock. However, in order to meet Aldi’s latest operational requirements and to ensure that the proposed store provides customers with the best possible modern internal environment, Aldi requires a very modest increase on the level of floor space currently permitted.”

Antoinette Jones is the owner of the property adjacent to the proposed store. She said: “I am not an objector, but I would like to request certain assurances to safeguard the interests of myself, my family and the valuation of my property.

“The most important thing is the aspect of noise pollution. There will be an industrial machine running 24-7 and I don’t believe the proposed galvanised mesh fence surrounding it is likely to be sufficient to screen the noise, which will be constant. I would have proposed that something more substantial be put in place.”

Cllr Brian Hall moved the recommendation for approval.

He joked: “If Cllr Tony Wilcox and myself go back to Pembroke Dock today with this not approved, we would probably be shot at dawn!

“I’m delighted to see it there.”

Cllr Jacob Williams seconded Cllr Hall’s motion, but raised concerns about asbestos on the site. He was assured that any matters will be dealt with properly.

The vote in favour of the recommendation for approval was unanimous in favour.
