A CONCERNED Milford mum is calling for improvements to safety on Great North Road, after an 11-year-old boy was hospitalised following a collision on Saturday.

Originally thought to have sustained critical injuries, the youngster’s condition has now been described by police as ‘stable and improving’.

But the collision has raised questions over safety in the area – which is regularly used as a crossing point by school children and their families.

More than 500 people have already signed a petition started by Jane Norris, whose 13-year-old son had to be airlifted to hospital last March, after being hit by a car as he stepped out from behind a bus.

“The sickening feeling in your stomach as you see your child lying there lifeless and unconscious is heart-breaking and I will never ever forget that day,” said Jane.

“So when I heard about the young boy on Saturday being knocked over on the same road I thought ‘enough is enough, something has to be done’.”

Joshua sustained a fracture to his eye socket and base of his skull, a fractured elbow and grazing all down the right hand side of his body in the collision.

“He was in a very bad way,” said Jane.

“Thank god he made a good recovery, but he wasn't the only person to be hurt on this road and something needs to be done.

“This road is used a lot by school children and their parents.”

Jane will be sending her petition to First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones, and the Director of Highways at Pembrokeshire County Council.
